Importance of Surah Fatiha

Surah Fatihah is a prayer that we read every day of our lives. If we make the minimum obligatory Salah that we are supposed to do then we would be making this prayer at least seventeen times a day. The fact that Allah (swt) has obligated us to make this prayer at least
seventeen times a day should show us how important it is. How important then must it be for one to learn this Surah and always reflect on this Surah since your Lord has commanded you to recite it at least seventeen times a day? This Surah is the gateway to our Lord if only one would realize the meanings that it contains.

This surah is called Al-Fatiha which literally means the opening; the Opener of the book and the surah with which prayers are begun. This surah has been given many beautiful names; it is called the Foundation of the Quran and the Essence of the Quran. It is also the seven often repeated verses because Al-Faitha is something that a believer is always reciting. It has also been called The Sufficient; because it actually comprises the entire summary of our faith in Allah. Surah Fatiha and the last verses of Surah Baqarah are two lights given to our Holy Prophet (saw), which were not given to any other Prophet before him. You will never recite a word from them without being given the blessings it contains.

The Holy Prophet (saw) had said about Al-Fatiha that, "By Him in Whose Hand is my soul! Allah has never revealed in the Torah, Injeel, Zabur or the Furqan a surah like it. It is the seven repeated verses that I was given". [Sahih Muslim]

Al-Fatiha is itself a prayer and reciting it is a condition for the correctness of Salah, as recorded by Muslim that Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) said, that the Prophet(Peace be
upon him) said; “Whoever performs any prayer in which he did not read Umm Al-Qur’an (Al-Fatihah), then his prayer is incomplete.” He said it thrice. [Sahih Muslim]

There is another hadith, narrated by Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said; “Allah the exalted said, ‘I have divided the prayer (Al-Fatihah) into two halves between Me and My servant. A half of it is for Me and a half for My servant, and My servant hall acquire what he asked for.
If he says, ‘All praise and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of existence’,
Allah says, ‘My servant has praised Me.’
When the servant says , ‘The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.’
Allah says, ‘My servant has lauded Me.’
When he says, ‘Master of the Day of Judgment.’
Allah says, ‘My servant has glorified Me.’
When he says, ‘You (alone) we worship, and You (alone) we ask for help.’,
Allah says, ‘This is between Me and My servant, and My servant shall acquire
what he sought.’
When he says, ‘Guide us to the straight path. The way of those on whom You
have granted Your grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your anger, nor of
those who went astray’,
Allah says, ‘This is for My servant, and My servant shall acquire what he asked
for.’ ” [Sahih Muslim]

Al-Fatihah is not merely an introduction to Qur’an, rather it is a prayer from man and the Qur’an is the answer from his Lord. Thus it has a relationship of a prayer and a response. If a person is an earnest seeker after truth, and recognize that the Lord of the Universe is the source of all knowledge, then he prays to Allah to show him guidance and Allah place the whole of the Qur’an before him in answer to his prayer.
